  6. This file contains over 300 Press releases (texts) collected in the
  7. Amiga Zone message base on Portal over the last five years, since
  8. April, 1991 to present day.  They range from the announcement of the
  9. A3000 Tower by Commodore, up to a long text posted by Jim Drew in Sept.
  10. 1996 and everything in between. Some of them were mailed directly to
  11. me. Some of them I pulled off Usenet and other online sources.  Many of
  12. them I typed in from literature I picked up at many trade shows.
  13.  
  14. They are in chronological order, numbered from 0000 to 0307. Each one's
  15. filename will give you some clue as to what it is about.
  16.  
  17. It's my belief that the history of the Amiga and the products that
  18. have swirled around it for years is important to maintain.  That's why
  19. this message base sat on Portal with nothing removed from it since the
  20. day it was created.  So folks can browse through these three hundred
  21. texts and get a sense of what went on these last five years.
  22.  
  23. Not all of these press releases are purely about Amiga products, but
  24. they all were in the p/r message base 'cuz I felt that Amiga owners
  25. would be interested in them.
  26.  
  27. And now for something completely commercial:  The Portal System has
  28. shut down after ten years of operation.  The Amiga Zone is moving to a
  29. new host system: CalWeb Internet Services.  The official press release
  30. about this follows below.

  32. A lot of you rant and rave :) on Usenet and elsewhere about lack of
  33. Amiga support. Lack of dealers. Lack of magazines. Lack of companies
  34. supporting you. Lack of user groups. Lack of everything.
  35.  
  36. Well, it's time to put your money where your mouth is!  
  37.  
  38. The Amiga Zone has supported Amiga owners, first on People/Link for
  39. five
  40. years, and following its shutdown, on Portal for the last five years. 
  41. That's a full decade of non-stop, continuous, professional (and fun)
  42. support online for Amiga owners.
  43.  
  44. It's fully my intention to keep it going in the new Amiga Zone on
  45. CalWeb, which I will still continue to sysop.
  46.  
  47. But I cannot do it alone, and I cannot do it without you.

  49. I've gotten a lot of very warm, and personal "thank yous" over the
  50. years, and especially lately since Portal announced its shut-down.  I
  51. appreciate every single one, and I've personally stopped in my frenzy
  52. of moving a huge SIG from one service to another, to write back.

  54. But folks, the reality of the situation is that I can't pay the rent
  55. with thank you notes.  This is a full-time occupation for me so I need

  73. THE AMIGA ZONE MOVES FROM PORTAL TO CALWEB INTERNET SERVICES
  74. ------------------------------------------------------------

  76. For over ten years the Amiga Zone has been an online resource, home,
  77. community, oasis, for Amiga owners.
  78.  
  79. For over ten years I've made my living running the Zone and supporting
  80. Amiga users all over the USA, Canada, and the world. 
  81.  
  82. Five years ago when American People/Link pulled their own plug, we had
  83. to find the Zone a new home and we found a good one on the Portal
  84. Online
  85. System. 
  86.  
  87. Well, it's happened again.. Portal has informed all of its customers
  88. that its ten year history as an online service and Internet provider is
  89. coming to an end on Sept. 30, 1996.  This is very sad, it's
  90. short-notice, and the decision is completely out of my control, but
  91. it's also irreversible.  
  92.  
  93. Portal is changing its entire business plan from being an ISP to
  94. selling a business accounting system to other online services.  
  95.  
  96. So be it. It's sad, but like I said, the Zone went through this before
  97. and now we'll go through it again, and come out the other side better
  98. and wiser.

  101. THE AMIGA ZONE IS MOVING TO CALWEB INTERNET SERVICES.

  104. CalWeb (http://www.calweb.com) is a two year old Internet provider
  105. located in Sacramento, CA.  It has a good sized customer base, and very
  106. knowledgeable support staff.

  108. It's also run by a long time Amiga owner who has been a friend of mine
  109. for many years.

  111. The world of modeming has changed much in the last ten years. In 1985
  112. you had very few choices and you had 1200 baud. These days, everyone
  113. and his dog has an ISP running and a web page

  115. But the vast majority of providers don't know an Amiga from a hole in
  116. the ground, and could care less about Amiga owners.

  120. In October 1996, a new custom front-end menued system will be added to
  121. CalWeb to host the Zone. It'll have features for Zone users that
  122. neither Plink nor Portal ever had nor were they willing to add.
